How do I get solar & battery for free?
This may sound too good to be true - but it isn't! QuitCarbon has helped many homeowners get totally free solar and battery systems and upgrades
- Can I really get a solar + battery system for free?
- Yes! Through California's SGIP Residential Solar & Storage Equity Program, qualifying homeowners can receive a solar + battery system at no cost.
- QuitCarbon works only with certified SGIP developers and top-rated solar + battery installers. After QuitCarbon pre-qualifies you, then makes a referral, our partner will double check your qualifications, then make a proposal to get you solar and/or battery (or an expansion of your existing solar/battery) for $0.
- QuitCarbon's partner contractors cover the upfront costs of your system and then obtain reimbursement from the State of California. This means you won't have to pay anything or make monthly payments. You simply save on your electricity bill - and the more you upgrade your home's appliances to electric (like converting your gas furnace to a heat pump - which QuitCarbon helps with :) the more you save on your bills!
- The SGIP Equity program is first-come, first-serve, and we expect funds to go quickly.
- Do I qualify?
- Maybe - let's find out!
- Answer a quick question or two (If you get sent here by a QuitCarbon email, you may have already done so)
- Request a solar/battery contractor referral.
- QuitCarbon and our vetted contractor partner will let you know if you likely qualify, and what your options are. There is no cost, no commitment, no obligation.
- Even if you don't qualify for this program, QuitCarbon will keep looking for future savings opportunities - and will notify you when we find them.
- What is the SGIP Equity program? Sounds too good to be true.
- The SGIP Equity rebate is a program funded by the federal government (through the Inflation Reduction Act) and administered by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). With nearly $300 million in funding, the SGIP Equity rebate provides solar + battery systems to eligible homeowners at no cost.
- There are 2 reasons why California is offering this rebate:
- Good for the grid: As demand for electricity continues to rise, using renewable resources like solar + battery storage improves grid reliability – a big problem for the state.
- Good for the planet: When demand for electricity outstrips supply, cities sometimes turn to natural gas "peaker" plants to meet demand. By installing a solar + battery system, your home can provide a better alternative. During peak demand, utilities can draw power from your battery system (along with thousands of others) to stabilize the grid and reduce the need to bring polluting gas peaker plants online. If you're approved for an SGIP Equity rebate, your system will be enrolled in a demand response program.
- Is this a rebate?
- No. Rebates require that you pay for something, then request reimbursement.
- This SGIP program, via QuitCarbon, is a 100% up-front discount. Qualified customers pay nothing now, or later.
- (Note that not all SGIP-funded providers offer $0 solar+battery - you might find solar providers that ask you to pay part of the cost - but when you work with QuitCarbon, we ensure that qualified homeowners pay nothing)
- How much can I save, compared to paying full price for solar+battery?
- For a typical California home, a complete solar + battery system requires around eighteen 400W solar panels and 1 to 2 home batteries. This system will offset ~100% of a home’s electricity usage and cost ~$50,000.
- Once installed, this typical solar+battery system will generate thousands of dollars per year in bill savings.
