Switching your home energy use from dirty and dangerous gas to clean and safe electricity will lower your utility bills over time.
QuitCarbon projects the impacts to your utility bill of switching to electric appliances (like HVAC heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, induction stoves, etc). We do so using our own model of your home's energy use, as you electrify, and the rates you'll pay for electricity and gas in the future.
Inputs to our forecast model include:
- CPUC (California Public Utility Commission) and ACEEE (American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy) forecasts of future gas and electricity rates.
- Efficiency and usage of your current gas and electric appliances, and your future electric appliances.
Note that actual utility bills depend on many factors, including some that are within your control, some that you can influence with advocacy, and some that are outside your control. These include:
- Changes in behavior of folks living in your home (eg. using more, or less, heat, cooling, hot water, etc).
- Utility rates, your options for different rate plans, and your choice of rate plan.
- Changes in regulations.
- Addition (or expansion) of solar and battery system at your home - or your participation in a community solar program.
- Changing from a gas to electric vehicle, and charging that EV at home.
- Weather extremes and changes to our climate.
- Geopolitical events that may affect the price of fossil fuel.
